B GRADE STRAIGHT THROUGH TO GRAND FINAL

The B grade turned in a clinical first 20 minutes of rugby racking up four tries against a stunned Dragons outfit. Over confident, the Pirates went off the boil and the Dragons hit the afterburner exposing a weak defence running in several easy tries out wide. The Pirates regathered themselves long enough to notch up another try winning ugly, but going straight into the grand final. The team will need to focus for the whole 80 minutes of the grand final instead of just 20 to pull it off.

PIRATES THROUGH TO GRAND FINAL IN BOTH GRADES

he B grade is looking strong for their grand final against Dragons although they will have to learn to apply themselves for the full 80 minutes and get a bit more mongrel about them because Dragons will have plenty. It is a good young Pirates side with plenty of talent coming through. It is likely that many of them will be regular A graders in 2006.

MIXED GRAND FINAL RESULTS

The University Pirates had four teams in their respective grand finals and performed extremely well overall. The B grade full of promising young players with a smattering of 'old bulls' stuck to their guns and game plan to romp home versus a thuggish Dragons outfit who had no answer to the Pirates clinical approach. The final score was 34-7 and was one of the best performances of a Pirates B grade in memory. Coaches Darren Hill and Finn Kellow-Webb were fullsome in their praises for the team's effort and cohesion.

The A grade who had played a patchy season continued their patchy form in the Grand Final. An error ridden game that was hardly a glowing testament to rugby union, Souths made more of their chances and showed a greater committment and passion than the listless Pirates. The likes of Craig Moore, Pierre Babin, and Adam Stafford and Jason Cole toiled in isolation, but teamwork and discipline was lacking. The 2005 Pirates did not have the same humility and hunger that saw the 2004 team dominate so convincingly. Coach Steve Maley was frustrated and disappointed with the team's performance and inability to follow the game plan and take the right options. The team on paper was as good as any but, let themselves and Steve down.

It has been a long drought for South Darwin and the University Pirates must acknowledge that they were the better team on the day and throughout the season.

The future of the club, based on the results of the weekend is solid. A raft of enthusiastic juniors supported by an wonderful and dedicated parent base has added a new dimension to the club and hopefully a steady stream of senior players in the years to come. The young guns of the B grade provide more immediate hope in filling likely A grade gaps next year.
